When it comes to healthy eating, it is practically impossible to find the perfect diet. Some recommend Atkins diet as the best one (it certainly is the most popular), while others would recommend some other diet that claims to help shed pounds easy. First of all, every person is different and that is the main reason why all these diets don’t work for everyone (that would be too easy, right?), but in all these talks about healthy eating and diets, we often tend to forget about one very important thing – what about processed foods? Are they considered healthy? Can they be in diets that are considered healthy?
Before we continue, here are three numbers that you should know and try to remember them:
- More than 75 percent of all processed foods that you can find in your local supermarket have ingredients that have been genetically engineered (also known as GMO ingredients)
- FDA has approved more than 5,000 chemicals that are in foods we eat
- 70 percent of all food in United States have been already altered with chemical ingredients
There are still lots of conceptions and myths about GMOs, but it seems that still most of the people are simply not aware how bad this food is for our health. Actually, Journal of the American Medical Association has recently published a study that claims that more people are killed every year by bad eating habits, than by smoking. Furthermore, it has been proven that eating processed foods will cause your body to burn up to 50 percent less calories, it will make you fat, it can imbalance your digestion and it can take years off your life.
This brings us back to diets – does anyone know which diets is the best for a long, happy and healthy life? First of all, you need to know that there is no one diet that is better than all the rest, but what diets are the ones we should consider? Yale University School of Public Health has done a study of all popular diets and while they couldn’t choose one diet that is the best, they have published that their findings point out that the best diet is the one that has no or minimal amounts of processed foods and is rich with plant-based food. After this study, more and more experts and nutritionists have started using new term instead of dieting – “eating real food”.
Defining what exactly “real food” is can be quite complicated, but it can be summarized to: real food is the food that either comes from earth or from animals that feed from food that comes from the earth. Real food diets have lots of plants like nuts, seeds and vegetables. Furthermore, experts say that real food tends to go bad – faster than processed foods or those foods that are genetically modified. One expert has defined the easiest way to make sure that you are buying real food – if there is an ingredient in the list that you don’t know, put it back and continue looking.
