How to involve your family into your healthier lifestyle

Most of us have tried more than once to lose weight and unfortunately, most of these attempts were unsuccessful. Furthermore, when people get married things get even more complicated and later when they get kids losing weight seems impossible. The need to take care of your family becomes your top priority and you forget about yourself.

Experts say that this does not have to be a bad thing and that you can easily turn things around. Furthermore, they say that the main reason for failure of weight loss process of people who are married with kids is that they didn’t include the rest of their family into it. The problem is when people only try short-term diets and workouts that don’t give good results and not making weight loss a healthy lifestyle choice.

According to one study in the United States, people who start a healthy lifestyle with their families included are more likely to actually lose weight and continue living the healthy lifestyle, while, on the other hand people who try the same thing alone and don’t ask for support are very likely to quit after just few weeks.

When you think about it – it is quite logical – how are you supposed to lose weight surrounded with people who eat whatever they want? Even worse – if you are the one who prepares the food for the whole family? This is another reason to include your family – instead of cooking separate meals for you and your family (even if you have the time) you could simply get everyone involved and by doing this you are not the only one who will be living a healthier life – but your family also!

Keep in mind that old habits are hard to break and don’t think that it is going to be easy. One of the things you should not do is to announce the changes. You should not lie to them of course, but you can start gradually with changes and not announce that they are starting from Monday. Furthermore, when you say “healthy foods” most of the people think about meals with vegetables and a lot different than what they are used to. Experts say that the best thing to do is change one favorite dish at a time – there are now many alternatives of popular meals that are healthier, but have same or similar taste.

Another thing you can do is to involve the whole family into menu planning, after they are ready to embrace the new healthy lifestyle. This will make the transition a family thing, where everyone is involved and everyone can say what they think. If you have grown kids, you’ll see how much they like going through cookbooks and looking for recipes.

Getting your family involved can also mean preparing the food together, however, keep in mind that you have to be patient, especially with kids. However, when they get the hang of it, the whole family can have fun in the kitchen, while living the healthy lifestyle.
