If you are a serious runner and you have already participated in a few races, you are certainly aware of some do’s and don’ts that might have big impact on your race. On a race day, there are some things you simply should not do or there are some things that you should do. You have surely heard so far hundreds and hundreds of tips and advices from experts, however, there are still some things that we do that might have negative effect on our race.
Here are some things that even experienced racers have done at least once in their running career:
Eating pasta night before the race
This is something that most of the runners do – it has become a sort of ritual – eating pasta the night before the race. It is based on belief that loading lots of carbs in their body, they are going to have more energy the next day. However, the problem is that this is not really necessary. Usually the problem is that people often overeat and having too much of anything can’t be good for your body. The result in the end can be something that you surely don’t want – you could get sick during the race or you could experience difficulties while running. There is a simple solution for this – if you want to eat pasta before the race, make sure that you eat a single, well-balanced portion.
Trying out new gear or gadgets in a race
This is something that runners usually learn the hard way – you should never buy something new and then try it on the day of the race. The ideal situation is to wear your standard equipment – like shirts, shorts and shoes that you have used a lot before. However, if you have a new gadget or piece of clothes that you would like to wear on the race, make sure that you train a few times with it.
Food is not the only fuel
Most of the runners, even those experienced, focus only on what food they are going to eat days before the race, believing that the food is the only fuel that the body needs for marathons. However, they sometimes forget how important hydration really is and some runners have found out this in the hard way.
The idea that the best way to improve running is more running
This is yet another myth that some runners believe. However, the problem with this is that it usually makes runners run more than they should and overtrain. Overtraining can lead to injuries, which could mean that you are not going to be able to run at all.
Style is not the most important thing when choosing shoes
Having the right shoes for running is very important and the right shoes are not the ones that look best, but the ones that fit your feet the best and that provide the much needed support. Make sure that you choose proper shoes, that provide support, while looking good.
